MADE-BY hosts first sustainability roundtable in Italy

The key takeaway of MADE-BY’s first roundtable in Italy was the desire for greater collaboration to align the Italian fashion industry’s sustainability engagement with the rest of Europe.

On the 3rd December 2013, MADE-BY held the first of a series of roundtables on sustainability in the Italian fashion industry. The day brought together experts in the sustainability sector alongside prominent Italian fashion houses to discuss sustainability’s hot topics and to share case studies and best practices.

The event attracted 10 of Italy’s most prominent Italian luxury fashion houses and was endorsed by the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana (Italian National Chamber of Fashion). Keynote speakers included, Luca Galvani, compliance and sustainability manager at Giorgio Armani and Burak Cakmak, vice president of corporate social responsibility at Swarovski.

MADE-BY’s country manager for Italy and Switzerland, Francesca Mangano, opened the event followed by MADE-BY’s CEO, Allanna McAspurn, kicking off the day’s discussions with an over view of the key sustainability issues facing the fashion industry. The talk focused on the issues of transparency within the garment supply chain, chemical usage and reporting in relation to new European regulations. These discussions brought home the importance of sustainability to businesses in light of evolving stakeholder expectations, new legislation and potential risks to reputation. The guest speakers provided valuable brand perspectives to the day’s discussions, with Luca Galvani from Giorgio Armani sharing the brand’s experiences in mapping its supply chain and Burak Cakmak speaking on Swarovski’s approach to sustainability communication.

The roundtable was an opportunity to hear about how MADE-BY supports fashion brands in their sustainability efforts and to listen first-hand to what fellow industry leaders are currently doing in successfully implementing a sustainability strategy into their business.

MADE-BY will host further roundtables in Italy throughout 2014.
