G-Star has been a denim pioneer for over twenty years, known worldwide for its cutting edge style and innovations. G-Star became a partner brand of MADE-BY in 2011 with the aim to verify its continuous process of increasing the use of more sustainable materials in its collections and improving the social and environmental conditions in factories.

Social Conditions in Factories
G-Star has developed its own social management system and compliance process. MADE-BY has benchmarked this management system and compliance process against the MADE-BY Social Benchmark.

The result is reflected in G-Star’s Social Scorecard: 5% of G-Star’s 2013 collection was produced in Class A factories and 43% in Class B factories, both increasing compared to last year. Additionally, 24% of G-Star’s collection was sourced from Class C equivalent factories. Overall, this equates to 72% of the collection. As part of G-Star’s social management system, all suppliers including those that are listed as ‘Unclassified’ are audited and coached to continually improve their social performance.

Environmental Impact of Raw Materials
In 2013, 19.34% of G-Star’s collection was made from more sustainable materials, an increase of almost double compared to last year. G-Star used Class B fibres organic cotton, TENCEL® and recycled polyester. Organic cotton accounted for 21% of the total cotton used in G-Star’s products, equating to approximately 777,000 kg of organic cotton lint. G-Star’s collection also contained the Class A fibre recycled cotton (0.04%) and Class C fibres linen and hemp (0.3%). G-Star also used polyester (Class D), conventional cotton (Class E), leather and silk (Unclassified).
