MADE-BY trains H&M’s Dutch in-store staff on key sustainability issues

Coinciding with the launch of H&M’s Conscious Collection in 2011, the Swedish fashion brand rolled out its introductory sustainability training programme for all its in-store sales advisors.

To build on this training, the brand looked to provide a more holistic training ladder for staff. In 2013, MADE-BY supported H&M in the Netherlands to translate the key sustainability issues into a bite sized training programme for the brand’s Dutch Conscious Ambassadors.
This training provided an add on to the brand’s e-learning tool ‘Conscious for Beginners’.

The scheme aimed to provide staff with the knowledge to respond to customer questions and requests regarding sustainability and the confidence to inspire consumers to join the brand’s conscious actions.

Conscious Ambassadors across the Netherlands were invited to the training in November, at one of the brand’s stores in The Hague. MADE-BY held four training sessions, training approximately 200 staff.

For each session, H&M’s Conscious Coordinators, introduced MADE-BY and set the context for the day, MADE-BY then presented the Ambassadors with the key sustainability issues facing the fashion industry. The training particularly delved into the environmental impacts associated with wet processing and showcased production technique innovations that offered sustainable alternatives.

MADE-BY then introduced the Ambassadors to the key industry initiatives and showcased brand best practices, this provided a broader context for a discussion on H&M’s sustainability efforts. Each training ended with an engaging Q&A session.
